My name is Connie Boylan. I am an Elementary Library Media Paraprofessional in Traverse City, Michigan. I would like to welcome you to the launch of the new NEA Read Across America blog. As Chair of the NEA Read Across America Committee, I am excited to share what NEA has planned for our members this year as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

As a Library Media Paraprofessional reading aloud to students is one of the most rewarding elements of my job. There is nothing quite like reading aloud to a room full of children and experiencing the joy and wonderment captured in their eyes as you crack open the book, peek inside and the magic begins. Children love you to read to them… they are your captive audience.

NEA’s Read Across America Day is the largest reading event in the nation. More than 50 million kids and adults took part in our 2011 Read Across America Day.

Read Across America is an excellent opportunity for all members of our education family to get involved. Teachers, Paraprofessionals, bus drivers, retired and student members all have a vital role in which they play in planning plan year long reading events, promoting the joy of reading, creating a culture of life-long readers. It also opens doors for parents, high school students, and community members to become involved in your planned events as guest readers.

2012 marks the fifteenth year for RAA. Thousands of schools and libraries will engaging children of all ages in their communities to “Read for the Trees” as we gear up to celebrate a very special Read Across America Day.

NEA is partnering with NBC/Universal, Random House and Dr. Seuss Enterprises for the upcoming Lorax Movie opening nationwide on March 2.

Over the years, NEA has made it our mission to provide members the necessary tools and reading resources. Everything you need is there at your fingertips. You’ll find our new downloadable calendar, posters, RAA certificates, you can even subscribe to the monthly Read Across America e-newsletter for the latest news and information on Read Across, reading and literacy. Just click on www.nea.org/readacross. Do you do Social Media?
Don’t forget… Sign up and take the RAA pledge.

Regardless of age… Read to your baby and don’t forget to Read Across America and help us build a nation of readers!
